Moving into a new space brings about endless possibilities, including those to deal with interior decorating. This is especially the case for first time home buyers when they are starting from scratch! With this excitement also brings a lot of intimidation. There are so many colors, patterns, styles themselves, to choose from. We pulled some basic interior decorating tips to help lay a good foundation for your next decorating adventure!
1. Hone in on a Style

One of the overwhelming hurdles when interior decorating is honing in on what style you want to pursue in your space. There are many styles to choose from, so start broader and think if you want something more modern or classic. Then narrow down your ideas further. Maybe you want something modern and clean like the photo above, or maybe you are leaning towards a farmhouse style or tuscan style. Do your due diligence and take notes of what your eye is drawn to. Focusing on a particular style will help make the shopping experience much less overwhelming!
2. Choose a Focal Point

Now that you have narrowed your focus on a interior design style, the next starting point is to decide on a focal point for each space. The focal point is something that will catch your eye first thing when you enter a room. A focal point can be created by being a large piece of furniture, like a couch or chair setting. It can also be created by a pop of color, like the fireplace in the above photo. Once you’ve selected your focal point, you can build the rest of your design around it.
3. Balance is Key

Like many things in life, having balance in the interior design of a space is important. Make sure that you don’t have “too many” of anything in a particular category. For example, too many focal points, too many large objects, too many bright colors, you want to ensure that your space isn’t overwhelming. Work to incorporate subtle contrasts throughout the space to create a sense of balance and calmness. One technique you can use to create balance is called the Rule of 3. This states that items arranged in groups of three, or odd numbers, are more appealing to the eye. These items can come from a matching set or can be brought together with your creativity. Take note when you buy sets like this, they usually incorporate different sizes and shapes to create balance!
4. Splurge on What Matters

Creating a nice and balanced space does not have to be expensive! You can do so in on a budget by spending carefully. Feel free to splurge on more of the big ticket items in a space, the couch in a family room, the bed in a bedroom, and dining table in the dining room. These items will last long and get the most use, so you want them to be quality pieces. Budget on your accessories and decor items, even DIY some accents if you are creative!
